Madanjeet Singh

"Madanjeet Singh was born in Lahore, in present-day Pakistan. He was imprisoned during Mahatma Gandhi’s Quit India movement. A diplomatic career followed from 1953 to 1982, and then came his stint at UNESCO, Paris. Madanjeet wears different hats: he is a painter, a photographer, author of several books, and since 2000, he is serving UNESCO’s Goodwill Ambassador. In recognition of his lifelong commitment to communal harmony and peace, the UNESCO-Madanjeet Singh Prize for the Promotion of Tolerance and Non-Violence was instituted by the UNESCO Executive Board in 1995, and has since been awarded biannually on the United Nations Day of Tolerance (16 November).
